Throughout the summer season, various charitable organizations, causes, and businesses set up car washes in parking lots across the United States. Among them is Big Pals-Little Pals of Columbus, which has been participating for many years.
Executive Director Aimee Heesacker stated, "We've been engaged in this activity for many years, although I can't pinpoint exactly when it started. Initially, it took place at the old Bomgaars location. Big Pals, Little Pals, and volunteers join forces to wash cars."
Scheduled for July 22, the car wash will commence at 10 a.m. next to the Bomgaars garden center. A significant supporter of the event, Bomgaars generously donates most of the necessary materials for the car wash, as well as providing lunch.
According to Heesacker, "Bomgaars contributed the soap, hoses, hot dogs, buns, and more. We also serve chips and water. Individuals who don't wish to have their car washed can simply come and enjoy the food, eat while their car is being washed, or browse the store. Additionally, we provide participants with a packet of information and an air freshener."
Dan Woulfe, General Manager at Bomgaars, has been actively involved in assisting the organization with this and other events over the years due to their positive impact on local youth. Woulfe expressed, "It's one of the most worthy causes in our area. I've collaborated with them on various occasions, and they provide opportunities for kids who might not have had them otherwise."
Heesacker says that the funds raised from the car wash would be directed towards mentorship programs for the children, as well as providing various amenities for both the children and their mentors at the organization's office.
"The support we receive enables us to provide mentorship opportunities for underprivileged youth, organize monthly coordinated activities, offer full hot meals once a month, grant scholarships to little pals for further education, and provide them with pathways and tools to achieve their goals."
Big Pals-Little Pals collaborates with other local agencies to ensure comprehensive services for the children, which will be further facilitated through the funds raised.
Heesacker elaborated, "(We have) community support from partner agencies. In case the children face challenges in other areas, these funds will enable us, through United Way and other agencies, to provide them with the necessary assistance."
Highlighting the significance of having mentors in children's lives, Heesacker echoed Woulfe's sentiments, stating that it offers them guidance, learning opportunities, and someone to confide in, ultimately setting them up for future success. She emphasized, "Research indicates that children with mentors tend to achieve higher grades, graduate from high school, continue their education, display reduced likelihood of absenteeism or delinquency, and many even progress to managerial positions in their careers. Moreover, they are more likely to engage in future community volunteering."
Heesacker clarified that the car wash and lunch are available through goodwill donations, and participants have the freedom to choose either option or both. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., welcoming all interested individuals.
