According to investigators, Pensick was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado in a westerly direction on 141st when he failed to stop at a stop sign at a "T" intersection. The pickup truck then veered off the roadway and came to rest in a grove of trees.

He was known for his versatility, playing both center and guard positions. In his senior year in 2013, Pensick was a key member of the offensive line that contributed to the Huskers' success as one of the top rushing teams in the Big Ten Conference.
Despite battling injuries, Pensick showed resilience and was recognized as a Big Ten second-teamer by the coaches in 2013. He was also awarded the Cletus Fischer Native Son recipient. In addition to his athletic achievements, Pensick excelled academically, earning his agribusiness degree from Nebraska in December 2012 and receiving academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013.
