Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts announced that Solich will be a special guest at Nebraska's spring football game on April 22, where they will have the opportunity to honor him and his family. Alberts acknowledged Solich's achievements as a coach, including being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and expressed that he had been working towards Solich's return for a while.

Named Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2001, Solich led the team to a record of 58-19, which included three 10-win seasons and a trip to the National Championship game in 2001. He then went on to coach at Ohio for 16 seasons, where he took the Bobcats to 11 bowl games.

Solich coached several notable players during his time at Nebraska, including Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch, and NFL players like Ahman Green, Mike Rucker, and Kyle Vanden Bosch.
