Richard Torres
Richard Torres' career at Nebraska is ending without him ever having played a regular season game, as the redshirt freshman quarterback surprised many by revealing on social media that he is entering the transfer portal on Tuesday morning.
“First I want to thank God for all of the experiences he had guided me through,” Torres wrote in a tweet. “Next I want to thank Husker Nation for showing constant support through my time here in Lincoln. I would like to also thank Coach Rhule and the staff for support and the opportunity to live out my aspirations. Last I want to thank my teammates who i can call brothers for life for making Nebraska feel like home. GBR.
“With that being said … I will be entering my name into the transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining.”
Among the Huskers' roster of quarterbacks, which included Jeff Sims, Casey Thompson, Heinrich Haarberg, Chubba Purdy, and Logan Smothers, Torres was one of the six who had a scholarship.
In the spring game last Saturday, the San Antonio-born quarterback completed 9 out of 18 passes, amounting to 66 yards and an interception, marking the first time his skills were publicly displayed. Having sustained a knee injury in high school, he skipped the previous season to recuperate.
During the previous winter, 11 Huskers players entered the portal, and some who had left the team earlier did so again last week. However, Torres is the first known player who has completed the entire spring workouts and then decided to leave, as it became clear that he would not have many opportunities due to the crowded quarterback position.
