Kearney Student Teacher Accused of Sexual Assault

KeyShaun Van Dyke, 23, of Kearney

Kearney, Neb. - A student teacher is in jail accused of sexually assaulting a student.

Kearney Public Schools contacted the Kearney Police department on Saturday regarding a possible sexual relationship between a student teacher and a teenage student at Kearney High School. After investigating, police arrested 23-year-old KeyShaun Van Dyke for first-degree sexual assault.

An affidavit outlining the case has been sealed, but a complaint says the alleged incident involved a 15-year-old.

KPD emphasized the incident did not happen during school hours or on school property.

“KPS personnel immediately turned this matter over to local law enforcement,” KPS Superintendent Jason Mundorf said in a statement “It is unfortunate that this event happened. Our students' safety is critically important and we appreciate the notification system that allowed us to be made aware of this situation.” KPD added it is cooperating in the investigation.

KPS spokeswoman Tori Stofferson confirmed to NTV News that VanDyke is no longer a student teacher at KPS.

Van Dyke was a member of last year's UNK football team as an outside linebacker. However, UNK Spokesman Todd Gottula confirmed to NTV News that Van Dyke is not currently a member of the team.

On Wednesday, a judge set Van Dyke's bond at $20,000 cash or surety. His next court date is set for April 12.
