Late Goal Sends Columbus and Kearney to Shootout

On Saturday, Nick Bennett of Columbus scored a late goal to tie the game 1-1 against Kearney and force overtime.

Despite both teams being held scoreless in overtime, Kearney won 3-1 in the shootout, with Bennett scoring the only goal for Columbus. Columbus coach John Arlt was disappointed with the loss but praised the team's effort.

The defense played well for both teams, with Columbus allowing few shots early on and Kearney's goalie, Lucas Crittenden, playing well against Columbus' attempts. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime and Kearney scored on a penalty kick in the second half, but Bennett scored the game-tying goal more than 10 minutes later. Both teams had opportunities to score, with Columbus having a total of 12 shots on goal.

Connor Kallweit of Columbus made six saves against eight shots on goal, with five of them being penalty kicks. The loss marks Columbus' third straight defeat after dropping two in the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament. Columbus will try to bounce back in their regular-season finale against Lincoln East on April 25.
