Norfolk Man Arrested On Suspicion of 5th DUI

A Norfolk man has been charged with multiple felonies after being apprehended for purportedly driving while under the influence late Monday evening.

According to a press release by Capt. Michael Bauer, Norfolk authorities stopped a speeding vehicle in the 1000 block of Riverside Boulevard at 11:57 p.m. The driver, identified as 44-year-old Robert Baker of Norfolk, was approached by an officer who spotted an ignition interlock device in the car that wasn't functioning. Officers also located bottles of alcohol under one of the seats of the vehicle.

Baker was then arrested on suspicion of driving without the device, which he is obligated to use due to previous DUI convictions. During a search of the vehicle, police reportedly discovered bottles of alcohol underneath the seat.

Upon arrival at the city jail, police claimed they detected an odor of alcohol emanating from Baker. Bauer stated that Baker declined to perform a chemical test of his breath and refused to submit to field sobriety exercises.

Baker was then apprehended on suspicion of fifth-offense DUI, driving during revocation, refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test, and refusal to submit to a chemical breath test. He was kept in the Norfolk City Jail and later moved to the Madison County Jail.
