The Shamrock boys soccer team hosted Lutheran High/Norfolk Catholic at Wilderness Park on Thursday, aiming to maintain their perfect record. They wasted no time, with senior Blake Wemhoff scoring in the first minute, followed by junior Frank Fehringer finding the back of the net three minutes later.
Scotus Central Catholic quickly increased their lead to 5-0 with three goals in just four minutes. Maclain Bailey added the team's sixth goal in the 58th minute, securing a 6-1 victory.
Shamrocks head coach P.J. Miller praised the team's intensity from the opening whistle, stating, "I liked how we got out really fast early. Kind of just put the pedal down and stayed down." Freshman Andy Padilla also scored his first goal of the season in the 25th minute, with Wemhoff adding another goal in the 27th minute and Fehringer scoring in the 29th minute.
Wemhoff, who had been moved from the right wing to the left wing, attributed his success to the change in position, stating, "I feel like the left defender is always a stronger defender because they also have the more dominant foot, so me switching to the left just puts me on a weaker defender... It just makes it a lot more easier, more successful."
Wemhoff has been a pleasant surprise for the team this season, with six goals and five assists, after struggling in the previous two years.
Scotus, currently ranked No. 9 by the Lincoln Journal Star, improved to 6-0 with their next match against No. 6 Grand Island Northwest on Monday. The team is gearing up for a challenging schedule ahead, and Miller emphasized the importance of continued improvement in practice. He also praised the team's performance in the first half of the game, calling it their most complete half of the season.
