(Tecumseh, Neb.) - A Sterling man, Jason Harms, has been fined and ordered to pay liquidated damages for hunting violations. Harms was found guilty on nine counts related to illegal hunting of geese on February 26th in Johnson County. The village of Sterling is located southeast of Lincoln along Highway 41.

The fine imposed on Harms is $1,700, and he has also been assessed $3,900 in liquidated damages. Additionally, his hunting permits have been revoked for two years. The discovery of multiple dead geese near sanitation ponds south of Sterling led to Harms' arrest.

The arrest was made after a group of hunters notified sheriff's officers about numerous dead and injured snow geese on February 26th. During the investigation, a deputy discovered that 51 snow geese and one white-fronted goose had been killed by shooting.

The birds were out of season at the time of discovery, and five spent shotgun shells were found on Sterling village property. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and the Johnson County Attorney's Office conducted the investigation.
