The Colombian navy has announced the seizure of a submarine carrying almost three tons of cocaine and two deceased individuals in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Colombia.
Two survivors, who were in a "poor health" condition, were also found and provided with first aid.
Captain Cristian Andres Guzman Echeverry stated in a navy video that the survivors' health condition may have been due to toxic fumes from fuel problems on the vessel.
The submarine, approximately 50-feet in length, was carrying almost 5,800 pounds of cocaine, worth over $87 million. The vessel was bound for Central America, and the seizure prevented more than 6 million doses of cocaine from reaching the illegal market.
The rescued men, victims, and drugs were taken to Tumaco and presented to the Technical Investigation Corps of the Attorney General's Office. Drug traffickers commonly use "narco subs" to transport drugs in the region, which can travel as far as North America.
In 2019, the U.S. Coast Guard seized a submarine with 12,000 pounds of cocaine worth over $165 million.
