The Columbus Police Department is investigating a possible DUI after a vehicle pursuit incident on Monday night (March 6th, 2023) that involved numerous area agencies.

At approximately 11:58 p.m. on March 6th, CPD officers attempted a traffic stop with a Chevrolet Impala that was observed driving recklessly on the west edge of city limits. The suspect vehicle initiated a pursuit by failing to yield to a traffic stop in the area of 13th Street and 48th Avenue.

The suspect vehicle led a pursuit that continued west, outside of the city limits of Columbus. The suspect vehicle returned toward the city limits, but turned north on 48th Avenue.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office assisted in attempting to deploy tire deflation devices in an attempt to bring the pursuit to an end. The suspect vehicle continued north into rural Platte County, where he collided with a guard rail and disabled his vehicle.

The suspect then exited the vehicle after the collision and became compliant to verbal commands. Platte Center Fire and Rescue assisted in transporting the suspect, who was identified.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office, Platte Center Fire and Rescue and CPD worked together to bring this incident to conclusion.

The suspect was treated at Columbus Community Hospital for his injuries sustained during the collision and has since been released, according to Columbus Police Capt. Doug Molczyk.

The suspect was believed to be under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance, though has not been arrested as law enforcement continues its investigation. The suspect’s identity will be identified if and when an arrest is made.
